Passover Eve 2024
In the sea of preparations on the day of the 14th of Nisan – the eve of Passover we must remember to do a number of important things in the time leading up to the holiday.
Matzah shmurah
A mitzvah from the Torah to eat on the night of Passover matzah shmurah made by hand with the intention of making a Matzah of Mitzvah, we must prepare accordingly and purchase it prior to the holiday.
According to the Zohar book, “The food of faith and the food of medicine” the Lubavitcher Rebbe over the years raised concerns about the importance of the matzah and sought to credit as many Jews as possible in this mitzvah.
Sell Chametz
During the seven days of Passover, it is forbidden for a Jew to own chametz in his home, so it is customary to sell the leftover chametz left in the house to a Gentile prior to Passover.
A chametz sale must be conducted before the prohibition period comes into effect. A chametz sale can be held online until the date of 14th of Nisan – the eve of Passover in the morning.
It is advisable to move up the sale time to earlier days, and not wait until the last minute.
Bedikat chametz
On the 14th night in Nisan, we have to check our house for a preliminary inspection to see that there is no leftover chametz.
It is customary to place ten pieces of stiff chametz (wrapped in paper or anything else) so that they do not scatter in the clean house for Passover.
During the inspection, the entire house (which is already clean for Passover) is searched, with a wax-candle and a feather to remove the chametz left in the house.
After the test, we place the wrapped pieces of chametz in a separate bag which we burn through the next day.

The time to stop eating chametz.
In fact, in the Torah, the prohibition of chametz begins at midnight on the eve of Passover.
The sages were afraid that people would make a mistake, so they forbade eating chametz from two hours before midnight, that is, from the end of the fourth hour.
See the updated time to stop eating chametz for this year.
Biur Chametz
After we carried out Bedikat chametz the next day, we burn the pieces of chametz in a designated place.
The elimination of chametz can be held until the end of the fifth hour.
The custom is to go to a campfire place and throw the chametz into the fire, this procedure is known as the burning of chametz or Biur chametz.
Read more about the laws and practices of burning Chametz and the time of Biur Chametz.
Bitul chametz
The Halacha states that in addition to Bedikat chametz and Biur chametz, the chametz should be nullify and abandoned.
Bitul chametz is performed for the first time at the end of the test, and the next day after the elimination.

Ta’anit bechorot on Passover Eve
There is a mitzvah for the firstborn to fast on the eve of Passover.
As a memorial to the firstborn in Egypt or mourning for the fact that temple work was taken from the firstborn and given to the Levites.
Today, however, it is customary to attend the conclusion of Masekhet of the Talmud which exempts the person from the obligation of fasting. This is because after the conclusion it is customary to have a mitzvah meal.
Prohibition on eating matzah on Passover night
So that we can come to Seder Night while waiting to fulfill the mitzvah of eating Matzah.
One should not eat matzah on the eve of Passover so that when the time comes to eat it we will eat the matzah with appetite and out of a desire to fulfill the mitzvah and feel its special taste.
Spiritual Preparation
Now that we have completed the practical preparations for the holiday, it is possible to proceed and go over the structure of the ‘Haggadah of Passover’.
It is very advisable to try and make sure that the household members are alert and refreshed enough that we sit at the Seder table out of joy and a relaxed atmosphere.
